Maybe your part looks a little wider than it used to, or you’re seeing more scalp when you pull your hair back. Maybe your ponytail feels smaller, or your hair just doesn’t feel as full as it once did.
Hair thinning doesn’t always happen dramatically. Sometimes it happens so gradually that you start wondering whether anything is actually changing at all.
“Wait…was my part always this wide?” If you’ve had that thought, you’re definitely not the only one.
Here’s the important part: hair thinning can happen for many different reasons, and not every type of hair loss should be treated the same way. If you’re noticing a real change in your density, your part, or the amount of scalp showing through, it’s worth paying attention to- especially before the thinning becomes more advanced.
And I don’t think the first question should be, “What hair treatment should I book?”
I think the first question should be:
“Why is my hair changing?”
This is probably the most important thing to understand about hair loss. It isn’t one condition with one cause and one treatment.
Someone may experience gradual thinning related to hereditary patterns, while someone else may notice increased shedding after an illness, hormonal change, major stressor, medication change, or another health-related event. Certain medical conditions and scalp conditions can affect hair density too.
Those situations don’t automatically get treated the same way.
So when someone comes into Curve Appeal and tells me, “My hair is falling out,” I’m going to ask questions before I ever start talking about a laser.
When did you first notice it? Was the change gradual or sudden? Where are you noticing the thinning? Are you actually shedding more hair, or does your hair simply look less dense? Has anything changed with your health? What medications are you taking? What have you already tried?
Sometimes an aesthetic treatment may make sense. Other times, my recommendation may be, “I want you to talk to your doctor or dermatologist first.”
I would much rather tell you that than sell you a treatment that doesn’t make sense.
You don’t have to wait until your hair loss feels severe before you start asking questions.
In fact, some of the first signs can be pretty subtle. You may notice your part gradually widening, more scalp showing through your hair, less overall density, a thinner-feeling ponytail, or gradual thinning around the crown. Sometimes you can’t point to one specific area- you just know your hair doesn’t look or feel like it used to.
Those changes may seem small, but small doesn’t mean imaginary.
And when we’re talking about treatments designed to work with existing hair follicles, earlier-to-moderate thinning is an important time to have the conversation.
That brings us to one of the newest treatments at Curve Appeal: FoLix.
FoLix is a non-ablative fractional laser treatment specifically designed for hair loss. It is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of scalp hair in adult men and women with Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV who are seeking treatment for hair loss.
And yes, I know what you’re thinking.
“Aleah…aren’t lasers supposed to REMOVE hair?” 😂
Yes. Different laser. Very different goal.
FoLix uses fractional laser energy to create controlled microscopic areas of thermal stimulation within the scalp. That stimulation is designed to trigger biological activity around existing hair follicles and support an environment that encourages healthier-looking scalp hair.
In normal-person language, we’re using controlled laser energy to encourage your scalp and existing follicles to respond.
There are no needles, no injections, no surgery, and no anesthesia required. You also don’t have to shave your head before treatment.
FoLix works very differently from something that simply coats the hair or temporarily makes individual strands appear thicker.
The fractional laser delivers controlled thermal energy into the scalp while leaving surrounding tissue intact. That creates a healing response within the treatment area. Lumenis describes the response as involving biological processes around the hair follicle environment, including increased blood flow and cellular signaling associated with follicular activity.
What FoLix doesn’t do is magically create brand-new follicles where follicles no longer exist.
That distinction matters.
We’re working with the hair-follicle environment you already have, which is one reason I’m particularly interested in talking to people who are beginning to notice thinning rather than waiting until an area has experienced significant hair loss.
This is also why I’m not going to promise you that you’ll walk in, get lasered, and suddenly grow a full head of hair.
That’s not how biology works.
Our goal is to create the appropriate stimulus and then give your body time to respond.
This is definitely not an instant-gratification treatment.
Hair grows in cycles, and those cycles do not care that you have family pictures next weekend.
FoLix is generally performed as a series of 4–6 treatments spaced approximately four weeks apart. After the initial series, maintenance treatments may be recommended approximately 2–3 times per year depending on the individual treatment plan and response.
A treatment itself takes around 30 minutes, but the changes we’re looking for happen gradually over the following months.
That’s also why I want to take standardized baseline and progress photos. When you look at your own hair every morning, subtle changes can be incredibly difficult to notice. Having consistent photographs gives us something objective to compare over time instead of relying on, “I think it looks a little thicker?”
Hair takes time. And with FoLix, we’re going to give it that time.
FoLix is FDA-cleared for adult men and women with Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV who are seeking treatment for hair loss, and Lumenis identifies early-to-moderate stages of hair thinning as an important candidate group.
That might be someone telling me, “My part keeps getting wider,” “I can see more of my scalp than I used to,” or simply, “My hair isn’t as thick anymore.”
Those are exactly the conversations I want to have.
But experiencing hair loss does not automatically make someone a FoLix candidate. Your pattern of thinning, how long it has been happening, your medical history, medications, scalp health, skin type, and other factors all matter.
That’s why FoLix at Curve Appeal starts with a consultation rather than simply booking six laser treatments online and hoping for the best.
There’s a big difference between someone telling me, “My hair has gradually gotten thinner over the last few years,” and someone saying, “Three weeks ago my hair suddenly started coming out in handfuls.”
Those are two very different conversations.
If your hair loss is sudden, you’re experiencing significant new shedding, you have scalp symptoms, or something about your history makes me concerned that there may be another underlying reason for the change, I may recommend that you see your primary care provider or dermatologist before we treat.
FoLix also has specific contraindications and isn’t appropriate for every scalp condition or every patient. That’s another reason a proper medical history and scalp assessment are part of determining candidacy.
I’m excited about this technology, but that doesn’t mean everyone who walks through my door with thinning hair needs it.
My job isn’t to sell everybody FoLix. My job is to figure out whether FoLix actually makes sense for you.
This is one of the things I think people are going to appreciate about FoLix.
There are no needles or injections, and anesthesia isn’t required. During treatment, you may feel warmth, tingling, or a mild prickling sensation as the laser energy is delivered across the scalp. FoLix also incorporates cooling to help make the treatment more comfortable.
A typical full-scalp treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, and there is no expected downtime. Some temporary redness or warmth may occur afterward, but you can generally return to your normal activities.
Basically, you come in, we treat your scalp, and then you go back to your day.
Because most of us already have enough things on our calendars. 😂
No. And I’m really glad we’re talking more openly about this.
Hair-loss advertising has traditionally been incredibly male-focused, but women experience hair thinning too. It just doesn’t always look like the stereotypical receding hairline or bald spot people associate with male hair loss.
For women, it may look more like a gradually widening part, less density, a smaller ponytail, or suddenly noticing more scalp in pictures or under bright lighting.
FoLix’s FDA-cleared indication includes both adult men and women with Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV.
So ladies, if you’ve been quietly wondering whether your hair is changing:
Yes. I’m talking to you too.
There are several different approaches to hair loss, including topical and oral medications, supplements, PRP, hair transplantation, and energy-based treatments such as FoLix.
They don’t all work the same way, and they aren’t appropriate for every person or every type of hair loss.
One of the things I like about FoLix is that it gives us a non-surgical, non-injectable laser treatment option for appropriate candidates. But I don’t think the goal should be to throw every possible hair-loss treatment at your scalp and hope something sticks.
More treatment isn’t automatically better treatment.
We still need to understand what you’re dealing with first. Then we can decide what makes sense.
If you’ve noticed your hair changing, you don’t need to panic.
But you also don’t have to spend the next two years pretending you don’t notice it.
Start with a conversation.
Let me look at your scalp. Tell me when you first noticed the change. Show me where you’re seeing it. Tell me what you’ve already tried and what you’re hoping to improve.
Then we can figure out whether FoLix makes sense—or whether I think your next step should be something completely different.
Because hair loss isn’t one condition, and your treatment plan shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all either.
Curve Appeal offers FoLix laser hair restoration in Kennewick, Washington, serving men and women throughout Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, and the surrounding Tri-Cities area.
If your part is getting wider, you’re seeing more scalp, or your hair simply doesn’t feel as dense as it used to, you don’t have to diagnose yourself before coming in.
That’s what the consultation is for.
Come sit down with me. Let’s get to the root of what’s happening.
And if FoLix makes sense?
We’ll make you a hair plan.
Yes. FoLix is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of scalp hair in adult men and women with Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV who are seeking treatment for hair loss.
A typical initial treatment plan consists of 4–6 treatments approximately four weeks apart. Maintenance treatments may then be recommended approximately 2–3 times per year, depending on your individual response and treatment plan.
A full-scalp FoLix treatment generally takes approximately 30 minutes, although treatment time can vary depending on the area being treated.
No. You do not need to shave your head before a FoLix treatment.
There is no expected downtime. Temporary redness, warmth, or other mild treatment-area responses may occur, but patients can generally return to their normal activities after treatment.
Yes. FoLix’s FDA-cleared indication includes both adult men and women with Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV who are seeking treatment for hair loss.
Adults experiencing early-to-moderate hair thinning may be good candidates for FoLix. Your pattern of hair loss, scalp health, medical history, medications, skin type, and other factors need to be considered before determining whether treatment is appropriate.
FoLix is designed to work with the existing hair-follicle environment rather than create entirely new follicles. This is one reason the degree and pattern of hair loss are important when determining candidacy.
Individual results vary. FoLix is not appropriate for every patient or every cause of hair loss. A consultation and medical history review are required to determine candidacy. Some patients may be referred to an appropriate medical provider for further evaluation before treatment.
